FDOT REVOKES PERMITS FOR LICENSE PLATE READERS IN STATE HIGHWAY RIGHTS-OF-WAY

The Florida Department of Transportation issued a memorandum dated August 31, 2026, revoking permits for automated license plate readers located within rights-of-way on Florida’s State Highway System.

According to the memorandum, local law enforcement agencies with affected devices have 30 days to remove them. FDOT also stated that it will stop issuing future approvals for license plate reader systems within areas under its jurisdiction.

FDOT said the decision follows an increase in license plate reader deployments and concerns involving misuse, data privacy and surveillance.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR BABCOCK RANCH?

Babcock Ranch currently uses license plate reader technology at community entrances. However, the FDOT memorandum does not prohibit all license plate readers in Florida. It specifically addresses devices placed within state highway rights-of-way under FDOT authority.

It is not yet clear whether any license plate readers serving Babcock Ranch are located within an FDOT-controlled right-of-way or are otherwise affected by the new directive.

Babcock News will provide additional information if clarification becomes available regarding any local impact.
